PROPHETS

Prophet "one who speaks forth or openly" , "a proclaimer of a divine message," denoted among the Greeks an interpreter of the oracles of the gods. In the Sept. it is the translation of the word roeh, "a seer;" 1Sa 9:9, indicating that the "prophet" was one who had immediate intercourse with God. It also translates the word nabhi, meaning "either one in whom the message from God springs forth" or "one to whom anything is secretly communicated." Hence, in general, "the prophet" was one upon whom the Spirit of God rested, Num 11:17-29, one, to whom and through whom God speaks, Num 12:2; Amo 3:7,8. In the case of the OT prophets their messages were very largely the proclamation of the Divine purposes of salvation and glory to be accomplished in the future; the "prophesying" of the NT "prophets" was both a preaching of the Divine counsels of grace already accomplished and the foretelling of the purposes of God in the future. In the NT the word is used (a) of "the OT prophets," e.g., Mat 5:12; Mar 6:15; Luk 4:27; Jhn 8:52; Rom 11:3; (b) of "prophets in general," e.g., Mat 10:41; 21:46; Mar 6:4; (c) of "John the Baptist," Mat 21:26; Luk 1:76; (d) of "prophets in the churches," e.g., Act 13:1; 15:32; 21:10; 1Cr 12:28,29; 14:29,32,37; Eph 2:20; 3:5; 4:11; (e) of "Christ, as the aforepromised Prophet," e.g., Jhn 1:21; 6:14; 7:40; Act 3:22; 7:37, or, without the article, and, without reference to the Old Testament, Mar 6:15, Luk 7:16; in Luk 24:19 it is used with aner, "a man;" Jhn 4:19; 9:17; (f) of "two witnesses" yet to be raised up for special purposes, Rev 11:10,18; (g) of "the Cretan poet Epimenides," Tts 1:12; (h) by metonymy, of "the writings of prophets," e.g., Luk 24:27; Act 8:28.

PROPHESYING

Prophesying signifies "the speaking forth of the mind and counsel of God" (pro, "forth," phemi, "to speak:"; in the NT it is used (a) of the gift, e.g., Rom 12:6; 1Cr 12:10; 13:2; (b) either of the exercise of the gift or of that which is "prophesied," e.g., Mat 13:14; 1Cr 13:8; 14:6,22; 1Th 5:20, "prophesying (s);" 1Ti 1:18; 4:14; 2Pe 1:20,21; Rev 1:3; 11:6; 19:10; 22:7,10,18,19. "Though much of OT prophecy was purely predictive, see Mic 5:2, e.g., and cp. Jhn 11:51, prophecy is not necessarily, nor even primarily, fore-telling. It is the declaration of that which cannot be known by natural means, Mat 26:68, it is the forth-telling of the will of God, whether with reference to the past, the present, or the future, see Gen 20:7; Deu 18:18; Rev 10:11; 11:3. ... "In such passages as 1Cr 12:28; Eph 2:20, the 'prophets' are placed after the 'Apostles,' since not the prophets of Israel are intended, but the 'gifts' of the ascended Lord, Eph 4:8,11; cp. Act 13:1; ...; the purpose of their ministry was to edify, to comfort, and to encourage the believers, 1Cr 14:3, while its effect upon unbelievers was to show that the secrets of a man's heart are known to God, to convict of sin, and to constrain to worship, 1Cr 14:24,25.

PROPHECY

Prophecy or prediction, was one of the functions of the prophet. It has been defined as a "miracle of knowledge, a declaration or description or representation of something future, beyond the power of human sagacity to foresee, discern, or conjecture." The great prediction which runs like a golden thread through the whole contents of the Old Testament is that regarding the coming and work of the Messiah; and the great use of prophecy was to perpetuate faith in his coming, and to prepare the world for that event. But there are many subordinate and intermediate prophecies also which hold an important place in the great chain of events which illustrate the sovereignty and all-wise overruling providence of God. Then there are many prophecies regarding the Jewish nation, its founder Abraham ( Gen 12:1-3; 13:16; 15:5; 17:2,4-6, etc.), and his posterity, Isaac and Jacob and their descendants ( Gen 12:7; 13:14,15,17; 15:18 21; Exd 3:8,17), which have all been fulfilled. The twenty-eighth chapter of Deuteronomy contains a series of predictions which are even now in the present day being fulfilled. In the writings of the prophets Isaiah ( Isa 2:18-21), Jeremiah ( Jer 27:3-7; 29:11-14), Ezekiel ( Eze 5:12; 8), Daniel ( Dan 8; 9:26,27), Hosea ( Hsa 9:17), there are also many prophecies regarding the events which were to befall that people. There is in like manner a large number of prophecies relating to those nations with which the Jews came into contact, as Tyre ( Eze 26:3-5,14-21), Egypt ( Eze 29:10,15; 30:6,12,13), Ethiopia ( Nah 3:8-10), Nineveh ( Nah 1:10; 2:8
13; 3:17-19), Babylon ( Isa 13:4; Jer 51:7; Isa 44:27; Jer 50:38; 51:36,39,57), the land of the Philistines ( Jer 47:4-7; Eze 25:15-17; Amo 1:6-8; Zep 2:4-7; Zec 9:5-8), and of the four great monarchies ( Dan 2:39,40; 7:17-24; 8:9). But the great body of Old Testament prophecy relates directly to the advent of the Messiah, beginning with ( Gen 3:15), the first great promise, and extending in ever-increasing fulness and clearness all through to the very close of the canon. The Messianic prophecies are too numerous to be quoted. "To him gave all the prophets witness." ( Mic 5:2; Hag 2:6-9; Isa 7:14; 9:6,7; 11:1,2; 53; 60:10,13; Psa 16:11; 68:18.) Many predictions also were delivered by Jesus and his apostles. Those of Christ were very numerous. ( Mat 10:23:24; 11:23; 19:28; 21:43,44; 24; 25:31-46; 26:17-35,46,64; Mar 9:1; 10:30; 13; 11:1-6,14; 14:12-31,42,62; 16:17, etc.)

Having been involved in the prophetic ministry for at 15 years now, walking in the office of a prophet. I have many times seen those growing in the prophetic ministry seeking and chasing after prophets, the prophetically gifted, prophetic ministries and conferences rather than seeking the Lord in the depths of true intimacy and relationship.

One of the most important realities within the prophetic ministry is character and the development of character. Character takes on many shapes, many forms, and goes through many levels of maturity as love is perfected, as the fruits of the spirit manifest and come forth in both the life of a believer, the life of a prophet and those within the prophetic ministry.

It is the Holy Spirit that brings forth character coupled with seasons of in taking the Word of God. Therefore it is my hopes that within the writings of this prophetic blog that you will be blessed in great abundance as you seek wisdom, discerning all things according to scripture, and trusting the Holy Spirit to lead you into all truth. In Jesus name, Amen.
